Tennessee 2024โyou brought us smiles, lacrosse, adventure, new friends, and yes, a bit of rain! While we can’t control the weather here at Signature Sports Camps, we can control how we respond to it. Both Session I and Session II saw their fair share of rainy days, but that didn’t dampen our spirits. In fact, the intermittent and mild rain provided perfect lacrosse weather, with campers excited to cool off under the Tennessee sky. Whether rain or shine, we had an incredible time, and we’re here to recap the highlights of Session I in Sewanee.
On the Field: Elite Lacrosse Training and Facilities
Our first session of the Tennessee overnight lacrosse camp took place at the picturesque University of the South (Sewanee). One of the standout features of this campus is its top-notch athletic facilities. From lacrosse fields conveniently located near our dorms to an indoor court perfect for box lacrosse, we had full access to immaculate venues that enhanced our training experience.
Skill Development and Confidence Building
Our Resident Coaches made exceptional use of these facilities. On the field, we delved into a multitude of fundamental skills:
- Defensive Footwork and Positioning
- Offensive Techniques like Shooting
- Stick Handling and Groundball Mastery
We started by critiquing and refining the lacrosse basics, building a strong foundation for each player. As the week progressed, we introduced advanced skill sets like behind-the-back shooting and tactical game IQ. The most rewarding aspect was witnessing each camper’s confidence soar. With 14 Resident Coaches available, campers enjoyed personalized attention, participating in drills alongside coaches who were equally invested in their growth.
Our athletes are with their Resident Coaches day and night, fostering a comfortable environment where they can be themselves, try new things, and step out of their comfort zones. We firmly believe this 24/7 mentorship is why we see such drastic improvements in on-field confidence at our camps.
Off the Field: Adventure and Camaraderie
Now, let’s talk about one of the campers’ favorite topicsโthe dining experience! Every camper raved about the Sewanee Dining Hall. From a made-to-order omelet bar to endless meal options and freshly baked cookies and desserts, it was a culinary delight that kept everyone energized.
Outdoor Excursions and Activities
But the dining hall was just the beginning of our off-field adventures. Campers had the opportunity to:
- Hike to Chestnut Lake: We pulled out the kayaks, swam to the floating dock, and even enjoyed some sunshine despite the rain.
- Explore Foster Falls: An off-campus field trip where we hiked through the Cumberland Plateau to swim beneath stunning waterfalls.
Evening Camper Entertainment
Our evenings were just as action-packed:
- Game House Fun: A fully loaded game house where campers enjoyed pool, ping pong, board games, and spikeball. It’s possibly our favorite place on campus!
- Canteen Time: After evening activities, campers relaxed and socialized, making memories that will last a lifetime.
- Group Activities: From “Medicine Man” (dodgeball with sponges) to movie nights and kickball, there was never a dull moment.
Our campers stayed busy, engaged, and, most importantly, had a blast!
The Coaches: Role Models On and Off the Field
Resident Coaches: The Heart of Signature Sports Camps
Our campers’ favorite part of camp is undoubtedly our amazing Resident Coaches. Boasting extensive lacrosse resumesโincluding impressive college careers at programs like Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosseโthese coaches specialize in every position. Athletes had the chance to learn from the best, both on the field and off. Resident Coaches double as camp counselors, participating in games and activities, and serving as exceptional role models.
Professional Lacrosse Player Headliners
We were also fortunate to host professional lacrosse players:
- Danielle Etrasco: Former WPLL Pro and current Division I coach at the University of Richmond. Danielle worked with campers on creating space, smart ball movement, and refining shots and fakes. She also introduced box lacrosse concepts during indoor sessions.
- Connor Kearnan: A professional player specializing in box lacrosse, Connor coaches college lacrosse in Canada and plays in both the National Lacrosse League and the Canadian Professional League.
Their expertise provided invaluable insights that elevated our campers’ understanding and passion for the game.
Looking Back with Anticipation
All in all, Session I at the University of the South was an incredible experience filled with:
- Outstanding Campers: Who formed a close-knit community.
- Dedicated Staff and Coaches: Who went above and beyond.
- Exciting Adventures: From lake outings to waterfall hikes.
- Competitive Play: Culminating in our end-of-session lacrosse tournament.
We’re already counting down the seconds until 2025! If you missed out this year, don’t worryโthere’s always next summer to create unforgettable memories with us.
