Drills and Training: Intensive Field Hockey Development
Signature’s intensive field hockey track boasts a Player Development model that is implemented to serve each age and skill level. After our evaluation day, campers are placed into groups that fit their skills so coaches can push each player out of their comfort zone while providing support and comprehensive training to our beginners. Here at Signature, we see advanced athletes who have been playing club ball for the past few years AND beginners with a season or two of experience. Players are grouped thoughtfully so coaches can coach to each individual’s level.
Fundamental Skill Development
Let’s start with the basics (that are the MOST important to evaluate and critique). We like to start with ball control, dribbling, passing/receiving, and shooting drills before advancing to more complex drills and games. Coaches are actively looking for opportunities to correct form and layer in creativity.
Position-Specific Training
Whether you’re a defender, middie, or an attacker, we will dive into the skills and IQ of each position on the field. And let’s not forget about our goalkeepers (goalkeepers receive 1-1 training with a specialized coach)! Training includes time on the field and chalk talks/film off the field. Defensive stations may include drills for tackles, footwork, and positioning exercises. Middie stations might include drills to strengthen your transitioning game like ball control, aerial passing, and more. And finally, wings/forwards/strikers will receive training in finishing, deflection, and positioning.
Strength & Conditioning
We’ve been known to hit the weight room every now and then! Athletes can expect the opportunity to train and be educated on correct form, sets, and strategy when it comes to the weight room. We also integrate speed, agility, and conditioning into each session on the field, curating a program that touches on each pillar of a developing athlete.
Scrimmages
There’s something about a scrimmage in the evening that gets everyone’s blood pumping! Maybe it’s the cool air after the sun goes down or warming up during a beautiful sunset… but we aren’t here to question why our campers love scrimmaging under the lights so much… we are just here to deliver competitive games and the opportunity to put all of those new skills to the test!
Challenges & Competitions
Can you tell we are a little competitive? We try to end every session with a big demo and competition. Whether that’s shooting accuracy contests, obstacle courses (featuring ball handling), or fastest shot competitions… there’s ALWAYS a winner and ALWAYS a prize worth fighting for.
Game Play & Advanced Techniques
We progress our players through gameplay and build-ups (going from 1v1 to 3v2 to 7v7) to interweb advanced concepts in our gameplay. Whether that’s elimination skills like spring, V-pulls, or other skills to beat a defender 1v1, or penalty corner training (concepts on both the offensive and defensive sides of the shot), we find a way to stop the play and teach a thing or two!

Field Hockey Camp FAQ: What You Need to Know
Athletes get 2 sessions of Field Hockey each day, and no two days are the same! Field Hockey instruction may include skills training on the field, crosstraining with speed, agility, & conditioning, weight training, film sessions, scrimmages, and even small-sided game play. In between field sessions, athletes get the full camp experience: excursions like walking through waterfalls, time on the Lake (which is right on campus), boating, camp games, and so much more. Check out this article for a deeper dive into a Typical Day at Signature Sports Camps.
Athletes should bring everything they need to play! Their field hockey stick, mouth guard, shin guards, cleats/turf shoes, and any other protective equipment (talking to you goalies!). We provide a full packing list for the off-the-field stuff in your welcome packet… we won’t go into the full list of underwear and socks here, but you will need your personal field hockey gear for this camp.
Safety is our #1 priority! Our camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, which means that we have implemented over 300 standards in health, safety, wellness, staff training, and programming. This is a voluntary accreditation that we opt into because it’s regarded as the top-of-the-line accreditation in the camp industry. In addition to the standards we implement, we have a Camp Nurse, Coaches who are certified in CPR, First-Aid, and AED, and athletic trainers on-site for our field sessions.
We evaluate each player to place them into groups that are a perfect fit for their skill set. Our athletes range from those with years of national club experience to beginners who may have just started playing this year. With our intentional skill grouping, we can tailor each group's progress accordingly.
Resident Coaches have collegiate field hockey experience at the DI, DII, DII, NAIA, or Club level. We’ve had coaches who coach for the NEXUS program, and coaches who coach high school and clubs locally. Our coaches choose Signature because of our structured planning, clear communication, and dedication to our mission.
We always have an 8:1 player-to-coach ratio. This 8:1 ratio is specifically geared towards catering to your child’s on-field experience and doesn’t include our support staff (Directors, Medical, or Vendors).
