In 2024, Signature Sports Camps proudly launched our first-ever overnight soccer camp in Florida, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how it turned out! We welcomed an incredible lineup of soccer coaches, enthusiastic players, and engaging vendors. Adding a new sports track is always a challenge, but with the right partnersโlike the exceptional Eckerd College Soccer Staffโwe knew we could deliver the ultimate on-field and off-field experience. Let’s dive into what made our Florida soccer camp truly unforgettable.
Elite Resident Coaches and Professional Guests
Our Resident Coaches are the heart and soul of the camp experience. These collegiate all-stars bring both playing and coaching expertise to ensure each camper’s on-field sessions are productive, competitive, and valuable. Off the field, they’re trained in supervision, safety, and our “Signature Experience,” making sure campers are not only well-looked-after but also fully engaged and having a blast.
This year, we were excited to have coaches like Finn Stelle, Thomas Peรฑa, Gabby Morman, and Kendall Drummond on board. With backgrounds in collegiate soccer, international play, and local coaching, their experience speaks volumes. They went above and beyond to ensure each player was progressing, offering personalized critiques and keeping campers engaged both on and off the field.
Special Appearance by Pro Player Nicky Law
Adding to the excitement, we had the privilege of welcoming professional player Nicky Law to our camp. Nicky’s impressive career spans from the English Football League to professional play in the States, and even stepping in as the Interim Head Coach for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Over two days, Nicky worked closely with our soccer players, sharing drills and insights drawn from his extensive professional experience. His presence was a highlight that our campers won’t soon forget.
On the Soccer Field: Skill Development and Game IQ
Our soccer sessions were designed to challenge and develop players at every level. We kicked off with the fundamentals:
- Footwork and Dribbling
- Passing Techniques
- Ball Control
Coaches ran specialized stations focusing on individual skills, allowing players to hone their technique and elevate their game. As the camp progressed, we moved into more advanced concepts:
- Offensive and Defensive Strategies
- Game Sense Enhancement
- Applying Skills in Real-Game Scenarios
We emphasized not just skill development but also understanding how to apply these skills during a game. Plus, with the World Cup Finals happening concurrently, we took advantage of any downtimeโlike unexpected Florida showers or midday heatโto catch the matches. Rooting for Coach Finn’s home team, England, added an extra layer of excitement!
Off the Field: Fun and Excursions
At Signature Sports Camps, we believe that a well-rounded camp experience extends beyond the soccer field. Our campers enjoyed a variety of traditional summer camp activities:
Paddleboarding Adventures
A standout favorite was our paddleboarding session with Urban Kai. Instructors taught the basics of paddleboarding and water safety before leading campers out onto the beautiful Boca Ciega Bay. It was a fantastic opportunity for campers to swim, paddle, and even showcase some impressive tricks!
Afternoon Camp Games
Each afternoon brought a new adventure:
- Pool Time: A refreshing cool-down between soccer sessions.
- Competitive Camp Games: Including kickball, “Medicine Man” (a new camp favorite involving dodgeball with sponges), and spikeball tournaments on the beach.
- Sports Shark Tank: A creative and fun activity where campers pitch innovative sports ideas.
Incorporating these fun and competitive activities re-energizes our athletes, leading to increased passion and focus when they return to the soccer field.
Camp Highlights: Beach Party and Tournament
No Signature Sports Camp would be complete without our signature events:
End-of-Camp Beach Party
We celebrated an incredible week with:
- Live Music: Our favorite local DJ kept the vibes high while campers danced as the sun went down.
- Beach Activities: We played tons of beach games and roasted s’mores by the fire.
- Farewells: A chance to say goodbye to new friends and coaches in a festive atmosphere.
Final Soccer Tournament
On the last morning, anticipation was at an all-time high for our much-awaited tournament. Campers put all their training to the test, showcasing improved skills and teamwork. Competing to be selected for their favorite coach’s team added an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie!
Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy in Soccer
Our first annual overnight soccer camp at Eckerd College in St. Pete Beach was a resounding success. While lacrosse has been a legacy sport for Signature Sports Camps, the enthusiasm and potential we witnessed in our soccer track have us incredibly excited for the future. The foundation laid by our inaugural group of soccer campers and coaches promises even greater things to come!
