Helping your child reach their full potential on the field starts with a strong foundation. Developing specific skills like quickness and coordination through speed and agility drills can give any young athlete a competitive advantage out on the field. Let’s dive in!
Why Speed & Agility Matter for Young Athletes
If speed were the gas pedal, agility would be the steering wheel. You can move fast, but without control and direction, you won’t get where you need to go.
In sports, speed is the ability to move your body in one direction as fast as possible, while agility is the ability to accelerate, decelerate, and change direction while maintaining control. Honing in on youth speed and agility training allows athletes to:
React Faster: Whether it’s beating an opponent to a loose ball or pivoting to make a defensive play.
Prevent Injury: Proper agility training teaches body control and landing mechanics, reducing the risk of strains or sprains.
Boost Confidence: When an athlete feels fast and capable, their mental game improves alongside their physical performance.
Foundational Speed & Agility Drills for Young Athletes
Some of the most effective drills can be done in the backyard, at a local park, or any nearby open space. The most important part is consistency, effort, and a focus on proper form. By adding simple, intentional drills into your routine, athletes can develop in the off-season, setting a strong foundation to build on. Let’s look at a few speed and agility drills young athletes can add to their routine:

- The Line Hop: Find a line on the ground (or use a jump rope). Have your athlete hop back and forth over the line as quickly as possible for 30 seconds. This builds ankle stability and explosive “twitch” speed.
- Shuttle Runs: Set up two markers about 10 yards apart. The athlete sprints to the first marker, touches the ground, and sprints back. This is the gold standard for practicing deceleration and acceleration.
- High Knees & Butt Kicks: These classic movements improve running form and stride frequency. Focus on staying on the balls of the feet and keeping a tall, athletic posture.
Advanced Agility Drills to Improve Change of Direction
For both speed and agility, it’s important to focus on specialized training beyond simply running. These drills are essential for development, helping athletes navigate tight spaces and improve reaction time on the field or court!
- The 5-10-5 Pro Agility Shuttle: Place three cones five yards apart in a straight line. Start at the middle cone, sprint five yards to the right, ten yards to the left, and finish by sprinting five yards back to the center. This is a staple of youth sports training to improve lateral power

- The “X” Drill: Set up four cones in a 5×5 yard square. The athlete sprints diagonally, shuffles laterally, sprints diagonally again, and backpedals to the start. This mimics the unpredictable movements of a real game.
- Ladder Footwork: (If you don’t have an agility ladder, you can use sidewalk chalk!) Practicing “in-and-out” foot patterns helps develop the “fast feet” necessary for elite performance.
The drills above are a great start towards strengthening speed and agility, but real progress comes from putting those skills into action. When athletes train in a structured environment with like-minded peers and consistent feedback, they’re able to develop faster and with more confidence.
